Why Payment Processing Speed Isn’t Only About Technology
When deposits or withdrawals are made (on a daily basis), most traders think about how much time it takes to complete that transaction. First, when making payments via credit/debit card, the banking system’s role and process of verifying and approving funds affect the overall length of time for completing a payment. Therefore, all banks must follow different protocols but can still take similar amounts of time for completing this process.
Secondly, although there may be many intermediaries involved in completing payments (such as processors, clearinghouses, or payment networks), each will have its own set of verification and security controls in place for protecting the funds being transferred.
Moreover, the regulations that govern how payment types are processed from country-to-country can further delay payment processing because many (if not all) financial institutions have compliance requirements—relating to identity verification, anti-money laundering processes, and monitoring transactions—all adding some degree of complexity to processing a payment, resulting in longer processing times.
Thus, we cannot conclude that technology solely dictates payment speed, but rather, payment speed occurs through the coordination of multiple entities (such as financial institutions, payment networks, regulatory systems, and trading platforms) each ensuring that they provide secure and reliable transactions.
